    Reaction time at a glance

What is a good reaction time off the start?

In Lights Out, an average under 0.250 seconds across three starts earns Pole Position and under 0.200 seconds earns Alien, the game's fastest tier. Sprinting draws a hard line at 0.100 seconds: World Athletics treats any faster reaction as a false start. Lights Out records every release after the lights go out, but a run with a start under 0.100 seconds cannot win a reward.

Key facts: What is a good reaction time off the start?
Pole Position Average under 0.250 s over 3 starts
Alien tier Average under 0.200 s over 3 starts
Jump start Letting go before lights out, or during an amber abort
Sprint false-start line Faster than 0.100 s Source: AP explainer (World Athletics rule), 2022

How the Lights Out reaction test works

    1. Step 1

      Hold the button

Press and hold HOLD (or the Space bar). Five pairs of red lights come on one column at a time, at random intervals.

    2. Step 2

      Wait for lights out

After a random pause all five go dark. Let go the moment they do. Your time runs from lights out to release.

    3. Step 3

      Amber means keep holding

Some starts are aborted: the reds snap off and every lamp turns amber. Let go then and it is a jump start.

    4. Step 4

      Three starts, one average

Your score is the average of three clean starts. One jump start disqualifies the run, so consistency wins.

    Reaction time tiers

Tiers use your average over three clean starts.

    Win while you play

    • $200 off a full-motion simulator rental for a best-of-3 average of 0.180 s or faster.
    • $100 off for 0.220 s or faster.
    • $20 Shift Arcade credit: every finished run is entered in a random draw, and faster times get better odds. Limited daily credits.

Rental discounts apply to bookings at the $2,000 event minimum, one per customer or event, not combinable with other offers, and expire 30 days after you claim. Codes are sent by email. A run with any start under 0.100 s cannot win a reward. No purchase necessary to play or to enter the draw.

    Reaction test FAQ

How does the Lights Out reaction test work?

Press and hold HOLD (or the Space bar). Five pairs of red lights come on one column at a time at random intervals, then all go out after a random pause. Let go as soon as they do. Your score is the average of three clean starts.

What counts as a jump start?

Letting go before the lights go out, or while the lamps show amber on an aborted start. A jump start disqualifies the whole run; hold again to start a new one.

How do I win $100 or $200 off a simulator rental?

Finish three clean starts with an average of 0.220 seconds or faster for $100 off, or 0.180 seconds or faster for $200 off. Enter your name, email and phone and the code is emailed to you. Discounts apply to full-motion rentals at the $2,000 event minimum, one per customer or event, not combinable with other offers, and expire 30 days after you claim.

What is the $20 Shift Arcade credit?

Every finished run is entered in a random draw for a $20 credit toward in-store racing at Shift Arcade Miami. Faster averages get better odds, credits are limited each day, and no purchase is necessary.

Why can't a start under 0.100 seconds win a reward?

Sprinting uses 0.100 seconds as the line between reacting and guessing: World Athletics treats any faster reaction as a false start. Lights Out still records the time on the leaderboard, but a run that includes one cannot win a discount or credit.

Can we play on real racing simulators at our event?

Yes. SimsForHire brings full-motion racing simulators to events across Miami and South Florida, with setup, on-site crew and teardown, and can run a live leaderboard for your guests. Full-motion rigs are $2,750 per rig per day with a $2,000 event minimum, plus tax and insurance.
