Indoors is the safer default for a racing simulator event in South Florida: you control heat, light and rain, screens stay readable, and nobody has to stop for a storm. Outdoors can work well when there is solid cover for shade and rain, a clear weather call-off plan, and a real building guests can move into if lightning is nearby. If your date falls between May 15 and October 15, South Florida's rainy season, plan indoors or have a covered backup ready.
What Miami's weather means for your date
- Rainy season. The National Weather Service's Miami office defines South Florida's rainy season as May 15 to October 15 (NWS Miami rainy season summary).
- Hurricane season. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, per the National Hurricane Center.
- Lightning. The National Weather Service says tents and picnic shelters are not safe places in a thunderstorm, that getting inside a safe building or vehicle is the completely safe action, and that people should wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside. Groups should have a lightning plan ready to use.
That last point matters most for planners: a tent keeps the rigs dry, but it does not protect guests from lightning. An outdoor event needs a nearby building to move people into, and a run of show that can absorb a pause.
Indoor: pros and cons
- Pros: no weather risk, controlled lighting so screens look sharp, air conditioning for guests and electronics, easier sound control.
- Cons: you need floor space and a clear load-in route for each rig, and some venues have rules on load-in times, floor protection or power.
Outdoor: pros and cons
- Pros: more space, great visibility for passers-by at a brand activation, and an open-air atmosphere that suits festivals and car shows.
- Cons: rain and lightning stoppages, sun glare on screens, heat for guests and staff, and the need for a level, firm surface and a power plan.
A simple decision checklist
- Check your date against the rainy season and hurricane season above.
- If outdoors, confirm solid overhead cover that shades the screens, not just the guests.
- Confirm a nearby building everyone can move into, and who makes the weather call.
- Ask the venue about power, surface and load-in, and whether it needs a certificate of insurance from vendors.
- Decide what happens to the schedule if you lose 30 minutes or more to weather.
