Spa-Francorchamps is a 7.004 km circuit in Belgium's Ardennes forest, with 19 turns, big elevation changes and some of the most famous corners in racing. On a simulator it rewards commitment: fast sweepers like Eau Rouge and Pouhon, long straights, and hard braking zones at La Source and the Bus Stop. Few tracks show off a good simulator as well.
The circuit in numbers
The Formula 1 circuit guide gives the length as 7.004 km with 19 turns, a 44-lap Grand Prix (308.052 km) and a lap record of 1:44.701, set by Sergio Perez in 2024. The circuit itself dates its first race to 1921, the creation of the Raidillon in 1939, and the opening of today's shorter layout in 1979. Formula 1 returned in 1983.
The famous corners
Eau Rouge and Raidillon
Often called just "Eau Rouge," this is really two corners: a left-hand flick at the bottom of the valley, then the steep Raidillon climb with a 17% gradient, according to the circuit. Formula 1 notes that the sequence has been part of every version of Spa since 1950. In a simulator you feel it as a sudden compression, then the car goes light at the crest.
Kemmel Straight
The long run after Raidillon. Formula 1 notes that drivers can gain places here on the opening lap, especially in cars set up with less downforce.
Pouhon
A fast left-hander that former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer calls the most exhilarating part of the lap, in the Formula 1 guide.
Blanchimont
A fast corner late in the lap, made less dangerous during safety changes in 1956, according to the circuit.
La Source and the Bus Stop
These are the two big stops. Brembo's 2026 Belgian GP data shows cars braking into La Source from 285 km/h to 86 km/h in 3.32 seconds at 3.6 g. Into the Bus Stop chicane, peak deceleration fell from 4.7 g in 2025 to 3.3 g with the 2026 cars. Palmer calls the Bus Stop the easiest place to ruin a lap.
Weather, the Spa wildcard
The circuit is long enough that rain can fall on one part of the track while another stays dry, as Formula 1 notes. Simulators with dynamic weather can recreate that. GT World Challenge Europe's official game, Assetto Corsa Competizione, lets players race different moments of the 24 Hours of Spa with dynamic weather.
Spa in simulators
Spa appears in several major simulators. GT World Challenge says Assetto Corsa Competizione uses laser-scan technology to recreate every circuit and car, and the Assetto Corsa EVO Steam page lists Spa among its laser-scanned tracks. Ferrari offers Spa on its museum simulators too. It also has esports history: in 2019, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris shared a winning car in a virtual Spa 24 Hours on iRacing, according to Motor Sport Magazine.
Tips for your first laps
- Brake early for La Source. It is the slowest corner on the circuit, and the lap starts there.
- Build up to Eau Rouge. Lift on the first laps and add speed as you gain confidence.
- Set up the Bus Stop. A clean exit onto the start-finish straight matters more than a late brake.
