Assetto Corsa is a racing simulator for PC made by KUNOS Simulazioni, an Italian studio whose development office sits inside the Vallelunga circuit. Released in December 2014, it is known for its physics, laser-scanned real-world tracks and a large modding community. The name now covers a family of games, including Assetto Corsa Competizione (2019), focused on GT3 racing, and Assetto Corsa EVO, in Early Access since 2025. Assetto Corsa is the simulation software SimsForHire runs on its event rigs.
Who makes it
KUNOS Simulazioni describes itself as a studio founded by motorsport enthusiasts (KUNOS). The game's Steam page says it was developed at KUNOS's R&D office inside the international circuit of Vallelunga, with input from real racing drivers and teams (Steam).
What makes it a simulator
- Physics. The Steam page lists tire flat spots, heat cycles including graining and blistering, aerodynamics with active movable parts, and hybrid systems with energy recovery (Steam).
- Laser-scanned tracks. Circuits including Monza, Silverstone, Imola, Mugello, Spa and Brands Hatch were built using laser-scan data. Not every track in the game is a real circuit; some are fictional or historical, such as the old Monza banking (Steam).
- Dynamic track and lighting. Rubber builds up on the track as laps are completed, and time of day uses a sun position calculated from the track's real coordinates (Steam).
- Telemetry and setup. Advanced setup options and telemetry for data analysis are built in.
Modding
From the start, KUNOS planned Assetto Corsa to be modified with the same editing tools its developers used, so players can make and share cars and tracks (Steam). KUNOS lists that modding community among the reasons the game quickly became a fan favorite (KUNOS).
Hardware support
The Steam page lists support for steering wheels, the most common motion systems, VR headsets, triple-monitor setups and head tracking (Steam). That is why it is a common choice for rigs that combine force feedback, motion and wide displays.
Driving aids for every level
Assetto Corsa offers four driving-assist profiles: gamer, racer, pro, and a fully customizable one. Modes include free practice, races against AI, career, championships, online multiplayer, hotlap, time attack, drift and drag (Steam). Hotlap and time attack suit a leaderboard format where each driver gets a few timed laps.
The Assetto Corsa family
| Title | Year | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Assetto Corsa | 2014 | Broad road and race car sandbox with modding (KUNOS) |
| Assetto Corsa Competizione | 2019 | Official GT World Challenge game; dynamic weather across a 24-hour cycle; PC and consoles (KUNOS; GT World Challenge) |
| Assetto Corsa EVO | 2025 (Early Access) | Proprietary graphics engine, new tire model, dynamic weather (KUNOS) |

How it compares
Assetto Corsa is a flexible offline sandbox. iRacing is built around organized online racing with a license and safety-rating system (iRacing), and Gran Turismo 7 is the main option on PlayStation (gran-turismo.com).
